Born and raised in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District, Mad grew up amidst the struggles of a poverty-stricken yet culturally rich Hispanic community. While avoiding the gang life that plagued his neighborhood, he still found himself immersed in the harsh realities of street life, navigating the worlds of drugs, violence, and survival. Yet, amidst the chaos, hip-hop became his salvation.
MC Jay was the first rap name of this talented artist he began rapping and performing at the young age of 13, quickly making a name for himself in the Bay Area under his stage name. His journey took a pivotal turn when he met Bay Area rapper Chill E.B., who gave him his first opportunity to perform as part of an anti-drug initiative called Friday Night Live. Mad performed at numerous high schools across California, using his lyrical talent to speak out against teenage drug use.
At a meeting at Chill E.B.’s house, Mad connected with two up-and-coming hip-hop talents, Damian “Domino Dee” Siguenza and Jason “DJ Assassin” Melton. Their collaboration led to the formation of the group Def-Line Express. Together, they recorded music and pursued a potential record deal with Delicious Vinyl, with Domino Dee eventually moving on to become a founding member of the legendary Hieroglyphics crew.
During this time, Mad continued to hone his craft, creating demos that caught the attention of notable Bay Area producers, including members of Total Devastation. Although Def-Line Express disbanded, Mad found solo success with his street hit “20 Sack of Dank,” which became a local anthem in the Mission District and laid the groundwork for his budding career.
Mad's persistence led him to connect with Hogstatus Productions, where he released two albums and performed extensively throughout the Bay Area. He then partnered with his former producer and an investor to release his debut solo project, San Franpsycho, which sold over 10,000 copies worldwide with minimal promotion.
After a five-year hiatus from music while living in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Mad returned to hip-hop with renewed passion, reigniting his career through a partnership with producer Slapp Turner. Over the past seven years, they’ve released four albums together, cementing Mad reputation as a force in the industry.
A fateful reconnection with his old Def-Line Express collaborator, DJ KV, and Domino Dee reignited the spark of their youth. Together, they formed City Built Ent, a record label and rap group committed to producing music, videos, podcasts, magazines, and even launching a clothing line. With over 50 songs recorded, the group is poised to make waves in the hip-hop world.
Now older and wiser, Mad reflects on his journey with pride. “Even at my age now, I feel like I’m better than I was when I was young,” he says. With the sky as the limit, Mad continues to push boundaries, inspiring listeners with his resilience, talent, and unshakable belief in the power of music.
